Program Objectives
The objective of The JoinT Program is to take a collaborative approach to hip and knee arthritis, to recognize knee and hip arthritis as chronic diseases, and thus take a long term management approach to treatment.
All patients attending The JoinT Program will be assessed through an intake appointment, where a long term treatment plan will be built. Our goal is combine all possible treatment modalities to reduce your pain as much as possible, and improve your level of physical activity.
Our treatments are precisely timed to maximize the possibility of success.
The following is a list of potential treatments that may be utilized
Treatment Options
PRP (platelet rich plasma): PRP is a regenerative technique that utilizes the patient's own platelets, leukocytes, stem cells to promote repair and regeneration. The JoinT program uses i-PRF as it's PRP of choice.
Physiotherapy: Neuromuscular training, and physical exercise have been shown to reduce arthritis symptoms.
Bracing: This involves the use of a brace that shifts weight off of the degenerated aspect of the joint, and onto the healthy part of the joint.
Anti-inflammatories: There may be a role for anti-inflammatory medications for some patients, but our goal will be to limit their use.
Hyluronic Acid: This joint injection is a thick viscous material that mimics the body's joint fluid. This treatment promotes an improvement in cartilage function. It is an effective for mild to moderate knee and hip OA.
Steroids: Steroids are potent anti-inflammatories, they are effective when the joint membrane is creating a lot of extra joint fluid (knee effusion). Thus we will be using steroids to reduce knee effusions. However they need to be used sparingly.
Joint assessment clinic: Some patients will ultimately require total joint replacement, The JoinT Program will help facilitate referrals to the total joint assessment clinic.
GLA:D program: This is a program run through our physiotherapy department. Its focus is on neuromuscular training for patients suffering from knee and hip arthritis.
